Q: I’m worried someone will find out about…
A: What we talk about (even just that we are meeting) is legally protected as confidential. This includes your goals and your needs (with some extreme exceptions I will discuss with you at our first meeting).
Q: What will we talk about on the first visit?
A: Some people aren’t comfortable talking about their feelings or frustrations, and that is OK. I’ll just start with some routine background questions and you can share what brought us together when you are ready. Perhaps you don’t really know how “it” became a problem or how you want life to be different. That’s OK. Neither of us needs to be an expert on your problem right away; that comes as part of the counseling process.
Q: How long does therapy last?
A: With the therapy models I use, health and wellness research shows most (not all) people get what they need in 6-12 sessions (2-5 months) – some more, some even less. The point is you decide when you’ve gotten what you need from our time together. My goal is to get you back to your life as quickly and effectively as possible.
